I almost missed my flight.

I have missed a flight one time on my way to an American Academy of Religion (AAR) meeting in Atlanta.  I sat in the gate area and everyone but me and two other men boarded the plane.  I still can’t figure out how the three of us failed to hear the boarding call.

This time, it started off as a busy last day in Capetown, South Africa.  I got up early to, preach at the African Theological College. Continue reading →

This is a repost of my first column for EthicsDaily.com.  It is a theological reflection on my recent visit to South Africa.

“Cape Town, South Africa, is one of the most stunning places I have visited. The landscape is unforgettable: mountains, blue waves, pristine beaches, rich soil. Juxtaposed to the beauty of the land, however, are townships that are an ugly reminder of the past.”  For the full column click here.

We live in a global world and the impact that we make on each other is getting greater and greater.  Therefore it is important to dialogue and be in conversation with churches, church members/leaders and theologians around the world.  IGCS is such a forum.  This is a blog written by John Kenyon who is the Founder/Director of IGCS.

How the IGCS Began

During the 1990s I worked out of New York as an activist in the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. We traveled to South Africa and hosted speakers from South Africa to come to the United States to share their stories and to rally support for Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress. It was a cause that united churches and nations from around the world.

I visited Rev. Ohm’s mission field in Khayelitscha Township, Capetown, S. Africa.  He has built over 25 nursery schools and has a large children’s ministry in this township. Over 1 million Black Africans live in this township in small metal homes without running water or toilets. I am presenting a paper, “Colonialism, Ecology and Han” and responding to Dr. Sigurd Bergmann’s paper, “Whither does the wind blow?” at the Christian Faith and the Earth Conference in Capetown, S. Africa, August 6-10, 2012. There was a book launch for Dr. Ernst Conradie’s new book, Creation and Salvation: Vol 2  at the University of Western Cape, August 8, in which I wrote an essay, “Creative Word”.
