The Center for Reconciliation at Duke Divinity School will host a public lecture titled “Beyond the Black White Binary: Where do Asian Americans fit into the U.S. Narrative on Race, Justice and Reconciliation?” by the Rev. Dr. Grace Ji-Sun Kim, associate professor of theology at Earlham School of Religion in Indiana.
As immigration and migration become more normative, conversations about the different migration experiences of various groups in the U.S. and their right as “legitimate” voices at the table are becoming more common. Often touted as the “model minority” or “honorary whites,” Asian American voices and experiences are often discounted and underestimated. Kim will provide a provocative exploration of the U.S. black white binary where much of the current conversation on race, justice, and reconciliation is housed.
A prolific author, Kim has published 10 books and written more than 70 book chapters, journal articles, and book reviews. Her most recent books are Making Peace with the Earth: Action and Advocacy for Climate Justice and Embracing the Other: The Transformative Spirit of Love. She is a co-editor with Joseph Cheah for the Palgrave Macmillan Book Series, Asian Christianity in Diaspora.
