Happy 4th of July weekend!
Let’s talk about the American Flag—the Confederate Flag—and the string of Black Church burnings which have occurred across the American South this past week—in the direct wake of the CHARLESTON MASSACRE...
In this past week alone, seven Black Churches in the American South have burned since the tragedy in Charleston—and since the U.S. Supreme Court decided to throw back the legality of displaying the Confederate Flag to individual states—essentially making this a state right…
So now, Alabama has removed the Confederate Flag from its statehouse—and Mississippi and South Carolina may do so in the near future…
What’s next?
But, is this fight over the Confederate Flag a distraction? After all the Flag is a symbol, and its removal from government grounds neither prevents nor shields citizens from violence…
Moreover, its removal does not lessen hatred; indeed, this fight seems to arouse submerged and historical grievances and passions—especially in this time of economic strife—which always gives way to increased racial tensions…
And, with lopsided trade deals, like TPP, that are sure to harm American workers on the horizon AND with rising home foreclosures AND with fears about where we all fit in this American Project—will there be more division in our future?
Or, will we wade through the haze of our history and form a “more perfect Union”?
