Let’s talk about the BLACK EYE on BLACK FRIDAY!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING! We pray that you had a joyous holiday!

This Sunday Rev. Jackson will be coming to you from London, England—as he prepares to speak at Oxford and Cambridge Universities this week—tremendous honors, indeed…

For some of you Thanksgiving was all about Family…And, for millions more—about 140 million according to the NATIONAL RETAIL FEDERATION—this was a time to take advantage of deep discounts courtesy of “Black Friday”…

But, for all of the joy in having found the bargains, there is much more going on underneath the surface…

Are we REALLY receiving discounts? And, if so, at what cost?

According to a WALL STREET JOURNAL report, BLACK FRIDAY is a “carefully crafted illusion” and “…retail-industry veterans acknowledge that, in many cases, those bargains will be a carefully engineered illusion…” as big retailers work backward with their suppliers to set starting prices that, after all the markdowns, will yield the profit margins they want.”

There were reports of arrests—fights in the stores over merchandise—stabbing and shooting and more…

On top of all of this, on BLACK FRIDAY WALMART workers all across the country—in Chicago, St. Paul, Secaucus, Dallas, Washington, DC, the LA-area, Sacramento, Seattle and the Bay Area—participated in acts of civil disobedience…

Even Santa was arrested!

These workers were arrested as they called for $25,000 a year, full time work and an end to retaliation. Reports show 1,500 protests nationwide – by tens of thousands of people in at least 46 states.

So, what was BLACK FRIDAY REALLY about? And, can we celebrate our bargains when they cost store workers so much?

Let’s talk about this with…

Atty. Barbara Arnwine/LAWYERS’ COMMITTEE for CIVIL RIGHTS UNDER LAW
Atty. Terry O’Neil/NOW
Danny Schechter, the “News Dissector”/Media Channel.org
Kevin Gray/Author/Former President South Carolina ACLU,  Grace Ji-Sun Kim, Colonialism, Han, and the Transformative Spirit.
